The Faces of Women in the Sermons of Jacques de Vitry
Commentary, editions & translations by Carolyn Muessig

This selection of sermons by the  thirteenth century preacher, Jacques de Vitry (c. 1160-1240), offers a compelling glimpse into the pastoral education which shaped female devotional experiences.
Muessig cleverly integrates an edition, translation and commentary of these selections in order to illuminates the cultural significance of the clerical conceptions of the role of women in medieval society.

"If anyone ever doubted medieval sermons could provide insight into
the life of medieval women, this is the volume to dispel that for all
time! Muessig's collection is filled with gems of insight on medieval
perceptions of and by women, and makes it clear that preachers did
not only teach, but also learned from, the women they addressed!"
