Depicting a life of suffering for the glory of God, the text contains passages that are among the most beautiful of medieval mysticism. Gertrud Jaron Lewis is the author of Bibliographie zur deutschen Frauenmystik des Mittelalters (1989) and By Women, For Women, About Women (1996), and the co-translator of Gertrud of Helftas Spiritual Exercises (1989). On this translation, she collaborated with her son, Tilman Lewis, a Toronto editor. This life is of quite exceptional interest and importance and well served by its present Englishing. The translation is fluent and elegant and the notes a most useful resource. This is a wonderful addition to Peregrinas fine series. "The Lewises are to be congratulated on their success of this translation
Accompanied by an extremely comprehensive commentary and [including] a useful bibliography and index
, this is certainly a text that students of medieval mysticism, and particularly of the role of women, will have to take into account from now on." |
